MARY’S MEALS

Ken Hargreaves who sadly passed away in June 2012 after a long battle with cancer was a most respected person in the Hyndburn district supporting many charities.

He was a past member of Parliament representing the Town of Accrington and a fine Rotarian of the Club of Church and Oswaldtwistle.  At his funeral former leaders of Parliament made great tributes to the man who fought to promote the disadvantaged, and at his Memorial concert organised by his Rotary Club held at the Oswaldtwistle Civic Theatre, it was standing room only, a measure of the respect of the local community.

One of the Charities close to Ken’s heart was Mary’s Meals an organisation that sets up  school feeding projects in some of the world’s poorest communities, where hunger and poverty prevents children from gaining education.

In his will Ken made a life changing donation of £20,000 to Mary’s Meals-Rotarian Susan Howarth, a dear friend of Ken expressed how proud she is of his wonderful legacy.

Kim Webster – Head of Communications for Mary’s Meals based in Dalmally Scotland confirmed to Rotarian Michael Jackson that this donation will make a huge contribution to the work that is done overseas in Africa, Asia, Latin America the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe where over 730,000 meals are provided daily.

The global Mary’s Meals was born in 2002 when founder Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow visited Malawi during a famine and met a mother dying from AIDS-when he asked her eldest son what his dreams in life were, he replied “To have enough food to eat and to go to school one day.”.

Gifts made through Wills are an important source of fund raising for Mary’s Meals with kind donors choosing to leave a lasting legacy, ensuring the causes they cared about in life continue to benefit after their death.

  1. Fine words about a grand fellow; unfortunately I only new him for about five years, but what a real gentleman. The Club will honour and remember him and also Fred Pickering, in a simple but memorable way, by planting an Oak tree in their name – in Rhyddings Park Oswaldtwistle.
