ROTARY TO THE AID OF FLOOD STRICKEN SARDINIA
The Rotary Club of Church and Oswaldtwistle at the recent Monday meeting presented a cheque of £500 to Rotarian Franco Sanna to help his birth place of Sardinia which on the 18th of November suffered a devastating Cyclone which lead to many towns being flooded and directly killing at least 17 people and leaving hundreds homeless. This is one of the strongest storms that has hit Sardinia for many decades.
Franco who 6 years ago took a party of Rotarians from his Club to Oristano, a town in Sardinia, and introduced all the members to the local Rotary Club which has resulted in a close relationship between both Rotary Clubs. The cheque is being sent to the President of the Rotary Club in Oristano.
The situation was so bad in Sardinia that a state of emergency was declared after the Cyclone struck with towns in the north east of Sardinia being worse hit when the rivers burst their banks causing water levels to reach 10 feet high.
Prime Minister Enrico Letta announced that 20 million Euros would be allocated immediately to emergency relief efforts, with soldiers deployed in the region.
Franco Sanna and his wife Kim run the very popular Italian restaurant “Francos” on Union Road, Oswaldtwistle and has been a Rotarian at the Rotary Club of Church and Oswaldtwistle since 2001. Franco is the Club’s photographer and provides all the pictures for the Accrington Observer.
