An ambitious Water and Sanitation project in Nepal is being organised by Rotary Clubs in East Lancashire which will cost £45,000. This scheme will provide water and sanitation to 400 school children and 60 households in Maikot Village in Nepal.
Rotarian George Blenkinship from the Rotary club of Church and Oswaldtwistle has visited the village of Maikot and see first hand the problems the villagers have in obtaining water, which necessitates long journeys down the mountainside of up to a mile, then having to return uphill heavily laden.
The plan is to install a pumping station from a spring downhill from the village to a holding tank above the school, and gravity feed the water to the school and houses. Also a toilet block will built at the school which would replace a very primitive system.
Half of the amount needed has already been pledged and hopefully the full amount will be raised by the end of 2014 with an installation date of January to May 2015 in the dry season.
Rhyddings Business and Enterprise High School appreciate that this project is very much required and have raised £500 to go towards the cost of the project. President Doreen Lawton said “ This is a marvellous gesture and is the work of Business Manager Carmel Cunliffe and many students at the school, it is a very significant amount and certainly will help meet the total figure needed”
To raise further funds a grand “WATER WORKS” Gala Dinner will be held at the Blackburn Rovers Premier suite on Saturday 28th June, starting 7.00pm. when there will be a drinks reception, followed by a 3 course meal. A live band, DJ, fun casino, auction and raffle will form the entertainment. Tickets cost £40.
An appeal is made to local businesses and residents to support this large project and purchase tickets. We are hopeful of an attendance of 350 and at the present time we are well over half way.
