Over 300 bike riders enjoyed the sunshine as they took part in a Charity bike ride on Sunday 8th June in 3 distance classifications around the Ribble Valley with the longest distance being 100 miles.
This event was spearheaded by the Rotary clubs of Clitheroe and Accrington and supported by members from local Rotary clubs who acted mainly as Marshalls. This was the first time such a project has been attempted and it entailed much planning as the riders travelled through Whalley, Settle, Ribblehead and Hawes, then through Kettlewell, Gargrave, Downham and back to Whalley.
Honeywell Estate agents were the main sponsors, and together with entry fees the amount raised is estimated to be over £5,000 which will all go to the RosemereCancer Foundation. In addition individual bike riders will be getting sponsored which will help increase the amount going to Rosemere.
10 members from the Rotary club of Church and Oswaldtwistle acted as Stewards at the start and finish of the event which provided cover over the 8 hours that oversaw the last riders arrive home.
Michael Jackson from the Rotary club of Church and Oswaldtwistle paid tribute to the 2 organising clubs for putting on such a successful bike ride and singled out Bill Honeywell from the Clitheroe club saying “ Bill has worked tirelessly on this event and should be congratulated for all the hard work and planning he has done. Bill is a remarkable Rotarian having raised funds for many charities over the years with bike rides the length of the country and all over Europe-he is a real hero!”
This project helps promote the image of Rotary and is a credit to all the members who helped make it such a success.
