The railway station at Church and Oswaldtwistle is undergoing a face lift after many years of neglect, in cooperation with Northern Rail the Rotary club of Church and Oswaldtwistle have just completed phase one, which entailed the removal of weeds and moss from both platform, this task alone has taken 8 weekends.
Phase two, which is expected to take, at least until Easter, will entail painting and cleaning the two passenger shelters and other issues on the platform areas; cutting back of the over-grown hedges, repair of the Railway sleeper box-planters and application of moss/weed killer to both platforms. These tasks will involve Rotary volunteers, Northern Rail and the local Hyndburn Borough Council.
From the Easter period, the major task will involve cleaning the subway, which will be followed by a great deal of painting, because at the present time this area is extremely grubby and is a very poor state of repair. Northern Rail can provide 2 or 3 personnel; therefore it will require several Rotarians/volunteers to assist perhaps over a period of 3 or 4 weekends, to achieve a satisfactory result.
During the lead up to summer it is planned to erect new signage boards stating that passengers “alight here for Oswaldtwistle Mills” and also to recognise that this is also the home of ‘Church and Oswaldtwistle Rotary club’. These signage boards will be a joint venture between Northern Rail, Oswaldtwistle Mills and the Rotary club.
In addition a local Primary School will be invited by Brian Haworth, Community Rail Officer for Northern Rail based at Accrington, to attend a railway course setting out all aspects of safety on the railways. Before they leave the pupils will participate in producing a Mural which will be framed and placed in a prominent position on the railway platform.
There are a huge number of issues that require attention at the station and it is anticipated that Northern Rail complete these with assistance from the local Rotary club.
The longer term plan will be to plant flowers and maintain some form of floral display in and around the platforms throughout the year. The Rotary club would be delighted to hear from any local organisations or individuals who may be able to help in this area. The Rotary club have set their sights on bringing the local railway station up to an excellent standard, thus allowing the residents of Church and Oswaldtwistle to feel proud of their railway station. The Rotary club would appreciate any residents who can offer an hour or two in helping out on small tasks; please contact Aslam on mobile number 07815 490337.
President Ian McTurk of the Rotary club paid tribute to Chairperson of Community Committee Aslam Mohammed, saying “All members of the club are very appreciative of what Aslam and his small team of Rotarians have achieved so far with this project and what they hope to do over the following months”.
