Members of Church & Oswaldtwistle, Clitheroe & Ribblesdale Rotary Clubs joined together for an interesting day at the cattle auction, witnessing the sale of the fat-cattle, calves & dairy cows.
President Ian McTurk, (C&O) who has many contacts in the meat industry said ‘it was an education for us all, ideally everyone ought to have a little more knowledge of how the UK agricultural system works’. The morning was completed by a hearty lunch with the Farmers in Mart café.
The party of Rotarians then visited Henry Rowntree’s herd of Aberdeen Angus, Windy Pike Farm Clitheroe.
Henry Rowntree offered us a 3 hour tour of his excellent quality cattle, which were obviously out at grass, covering several fields. Henry was highlighting not only the quality of the cattle, but also the excellent newly planted hedgerows & quality grass swards. Obviously a real modern stockman, but also backed-up with a huge amount of genic data collected for all his breeding stock. This is a predominantly grass farm running to 500 acres, set in the beautiful countryside of the Ribble Valley.
Again, another good vocational visit with all Rotarians enjoying the knowledge gained.
