The Rotary club of Church and Oswaldtwistle, for the second year running have won the Fred Pickering trophy in the bowling green Doubles knock out competition which is competed by all Rotary clubs in East Lancashire.

The winners as last year were Rotarians Mike Hindle and Michael Jackson who won  the earlier knock out  rounds in May. In June  they  played against Peter Cunliffe and Barry Lancaster from Clitheroe Rotary in the semi final, this match was a very close encounter and despite an early lead from the Ossy lads the Clitheroe pair rallied strongly and were unlucky to be beaten when in the final end their winning bowls were hit by a last bowl “strike” which became a three bowl advantage  to Oswaldtwistle!.

The final like the semi final was played at the Globe bowling club in Accrington and their opponents were Barry Wood and David Frost from Ribblesdale Rotary. The standard of the bowling was of the highest level with Mike Hindle being outstanding and making it very difficult for Barry and David to cope with such impressive bowling. Although there was a spirited late comeback the Church and Oswaldtwistle pair ran out as winners.

Earlier in the evening Jim Hargreaves and Aslam Mohammed from Church and Oswaldtwistle were beaten in the semi final by Barry Wood and David Frost which prevented an all Ossy final.

A presentation of the trophy was made by President Ian McTurk who said “ Obviously I am pleased my club came out as victors, but the real winners were all the Rotary clubs who entered this completion over the past month which provided such a grand atmosphere , not only of striving to win but by the friendship that resulted both during the matches and  by the joining together afterwards for supper and good banter. This was Rotary at its very best on the social side.”

Full credit goes to Mike Hindle who managed to produce a first class event without any hitches, all participants considered the tournament to be a great success.
